About  Billy Joel

Billy Joel is an American musician and pianist, singer-songwriter, and classical composer.
Billy Joel released his first hit in 1973 with a song called “Piano Man”, which he wrote describing his regular job playing at a Los Angeles piano bar in the early 1970

According to the RIAA Billy Joel is the sixth best-selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in the United States with a total of 33 Top 40 hits in the United States. Additionally he is a 6-time Grammy Award winner.

Billy Joel was born in the Bronx in New York. His upbringing in the Bronx was the inspiration for many of his compositions such as “Uptown Girl” and he has managed to maintain a hold on his roots throughout his career.

Billy Joel has been influenced by many different genres of music from classical, jazz, gospel, pop, rock and roll etc. It was said that artist Ray Charles was a big influence on both his music and personal life. Other influences include the Beatles, Paul Simon, The Beach Boys, Mozart, Elton John, Elvis Presley etc.

At an early age Billy’s mother would insist that he learned to play the piano although it was said that Billy was reluctant to learn.  Like many musicians, composers and song-writers Billy suffered from serious depression for many years and even attempted to commit suicide on one occasion. As a result Joel was checked into Meadowbrook Hospital where he received treatment for his depression.

Joel has recently re-released a song called “She’s Always a Woman” from his 1977 album “The Stranger” and is currently in UK charts (2010).

Sheet Music

If you are learning to play an instrument then it is very useful to be able to read sheet music although it is by no means a mandatory requirement as many great artists such as Paul McCartney cannot read music.

So what exactly is sheet music?

Sheet music is essentially some form of musical notation weather hand written, printed or on a computer screen. It is used as a record or guide to a means to perform a piece of music and gives details about chord changes, melodies and arrangements.

Methods for documenting music notation have existed for four thousand years. The earliest form of sheet music or musical notation was said to have been written on clay tablets by ancient Babylonians and Greeks. Sheet music is more common in western culture although non-western cultures have developed their own forms of music notation.

Sheet music can help illustrate parts of a song or performance that would not be obvious through simply listening. Reading sheet music is considered to be a special form of literacy and the ability to perform an unfamiliar piece of work after viewing it for the first time requires a great deal of skill. Some very skilful musicians are able to read a piece of music and hear the sounds in their head without playing a single note.

Sheet music can come in various formats. If the piece is composed for just one instrument or voice then it will be printed as one piece. However, if the piece requires more than one person they will often have a separate sheet of music or a “part” to play from. Classical musicians would often have what’s called a “lead sheet” at hand when performing a piece of music.

A collection of related sheet music is also referred to as “score”. An example of a score might be the musical sound track for a film. A score consists of each instrument or vocal part arranged in vertical alignment. There are various different types of score such full score, miniature score, study score, piano score, vocal score, short score and underscore. I will not go into any details about the different types.

Towards the end of the 20th century software that can read scanned sheet music was developed using technology known as “Optical Character Recognition”. This type of sheet music was known as “Virtual sheet music”. Virtual Sheet music was later converted to “Digital Sheet Music”. The advantage of Digital sheet music was that it could be downloaded from the internet. Digital sheet music files can be manipulated and are ideal for musicians who wish to make instrument and transposition changes and play back the files via MIDI.
